The SpeakerHub can "speak" in two ways: the most common is typing out a message in advance, which the SpeakerHub will then read aloud using text-to-speech. Alternatively, users can upload an MP3 file, which could include spoken words in another language, for example.
While the SpeakerHub does require an internet connection to function, using a 2.4 GHz WiFi connection, it will not work without an internet connection. Users do not need to do anything with their existing devices, and they can mix and match as many hubs as they desire.
In terms of volume, the SpeakerHub is not meant to be a security siren or a loudspeaker, but rather closer in volume to an Echo Dot. It works great if the user is in the same room, but they may not hear it from another floor.
The SpeakerHub is USB-powered, so as long as users have the appropriate plug-in USB adapter, they can power it from 220 or 480V.
The Smart Home Starter Kit includes the SpeakerHub and two water leak sensors. Users can receive audible notifications of system alerts and events, with selected sounds/tones as well as custom spoken messages like "water detected in the basement!"
